"In the old abandoned farmhouse in the suburbs of the nearby city, a group of outcasts have retrofitted it as their hideout. The late autumn sun sets to the west, warming the house with its cozy rays of light. The house may be dingy and drab, but in this golden hour moment, it is home."
This is my take on one of the maps provided in the D&D Candlekeep Mystery's book. Specifically, this is the Amberdune Hideout from the 2nd adventure in the book. In the book, the players go to The Wide marketplace in the Upper City of Baldur's Gate and eventually find themselves in this old house investigating a pack of Jackelweres using it as a hideout.
I'm using this adventure in my homebrew world. I am reenvisioning the hideout in this abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of a city in my world. The players are going to be there during the autumn season, so I leaned into it with the theme and colors. I spent a lot of time working on the lighting to get that classic golden hour autumn sunset (with help and advice from Reddit). In the end, I'm really happy with how it turned out!
Two important notes if you plan on cloning this map:
- The grid is actually a bunch of pathways I made using the path tool. I really wanted the house to be at an angle, and I wanted the grid to line up with the house. Unfortunately, the grid tool cannot be rotated, so I basically had to make my own grid. Keep this in mind if you want to alter the grid in anyway. The paths are all grouped together to make it easier for you to move it around.
- The various lighting effects were done in 3 main ways: first, using the "shadow" texture with the brush tool to shade in the floor where I wanted shadows. Second, lowering the brightness of stamps that are sitauted within shadows. Three, using a combination of orange and regular light stamps at various opacities, saturations, and brightnesses. This all means that if you want to edit the map (to be a different time of day for example), it might be a lot of work to edit.
