#11: The Sulking Selkie

The Sulking Selkie is a small tavern perched atop a sea cliff at the edge of a remote, rocky island. The Selkie’s porch juts out over the cliff, giving patrons an excellent view of the crashing waves below.

Though one might think this would be a short-lived location for a drinking establishment, the ownership boasts a thirty-year run with no falling deaths on account of the many fishing nets they’ve hung just beneath the porch. Every evening before closing time a staff member will head outside and throw a rope down to anyone caught in the nets.

The tavern has an excellent local reputation, so much so that “getting caught in the Selkie’s net” has become a sort of rite of passage for the youth of the island and the expression is synonymous with a good time.

What's On Tap? The Sulking Selkie is famous for its red ale, considered by all who sample it to be the quintessence of its style. The recipe is said to have originated with the eponymous selkie, who local legend holds traded it to a local fisherman in exchange for her seal’s skin.

Meet the Staff: The Sulking Selkie is owned by brothers Alastair and Reynold Warren, who inherited it from their mother. The Warren family claims descent from a selkie—a claim most locals will dismiss as hogwash…though most would admit that the Warrens do have a particular aptitude for swimming and a strange taste for raw fish.
