The idea is that this is a map from before the "Ruination" a massive explosion of necrotic energy that erupted from these islands about 1000 years ago, covering the whole world. The source of the energy being the Spring of Life where a king attempted to bring his dead wife back to life after she had been killed by a powerful poison meant for him. The events shattered the barrier between the spirit world and the mortal realm causing all living beings on the island to perish. The more powerful beings managed to keep some of their characteristics as they turned into wraiths of themselves. The whole world saw the green energy fill the skies, covering up the sunlight.
Now 1000 years later, all the villages, monasteries and the capital city of Helia are all in ruins. The island is covered in a dark mist that holds all kinds of wraiths and spirits. On the island there are several powerful wraiths and a few beings that managed to survive the Ruination with the help of the Waters of Life, taken before it was contaminated. One of which is a nature spirit, a treant with the waters flowing through him. Dedicated to getting the forests back to life. Another is an old monk from the Monastery of Dusk. Protected by a small vial containing the waters that all the monks wore around their neck, he also has the ability to control the dead allowing him to survive on these forsaken islands.
The mist is controlled by the wraith of the king still searching for his beloved wife. This dark mist is sent across the world, the dead with it, looking for any sign of her.
For League of Legends / Runeterra world fans, this is these are the Shadow Isles, the treant is Maokai and the old monk is Yorick. The wraiths include, but not limited to Hecarim and Thresh, led by the king, Viego.
