Founded around 1325 by the Mexica (Aztecs) to the south of the city of Tlatelolco, Tenochtitlán was the capital of an empire and a remarkable feat of engineering. It was constructed on the Lake Texcoco using the chinampas system and linked to the mainland by bridges and aqueducts.
