The Ardat'kek val is the grown seed of a flesh eating tree, which not only consumes the flesh but also transforms the remains to something new, something unspeakable and horrifying, not bearing any resemblance to the former beings, sending them out to bring the tree more flesh to consume. A never ending cycle which results in the vanishing of dozens of people and even whole settlements until it is stopped.
