Getting started with Inkarnate
What is Inkarnate?
Inkarnate is an online map-making platform that lets you create and manage fantasy maps.
A lot of different people enjoy and trust our app for their map-making needs:
- Tabletop RPG game masters and players,
- fantasy world builders and book authors,
- boardgame designers,
- artistic people looking for ways to expand their creative skills,
- and many others, young and old!
Being an online tool, Inkarnate allows you to access and edit your maps from anywhere – all you need is Internet connection, and you're all set to bring your fantasy worlds to life!
Do I need to be an artist to create good maps?
Not at all! Most of our users don’t have any specialized artistic skills – in fact, we often hear how using Inkarnate helps them to develop their creative skills!
Inkarnate provides you with a great variety of high-definition fantasy art that you can just place on your maps without effort, and simple tools to assist you in creating your maps.
What kind of maps can I create with Inkarnate?
With Inkarnate you can create unique:
- World & Region Maps
- City & Village Maps
- Battlemaps (including Interior Maps)
- Scene & Isometric Maps

What’s the difference between the plans?
The Free plan gives you access to Inkarnate's basic features and lets you explore the platform. It includes:
- A small selection of our art
- Create up to 3 maps
- Exporting maps in up to 2k resolution
- Editing maps in 2k resolution
- License for personal use
The Creator plan unlocks more map styles, and enhances those available in the Free version. Here are the main additions compared to the Free version:
- More art: thousands of additional HD stamps, textures, fonts!
- Up to 100 maps
- Regular art updates
- Editing maps in 3 or 4k resolution
- Exporting maps in up to 8k resolution
- Allows uploading custom art and use it alongside Inkarnate art
- Cloning of other user's maps from Explore or their Profile
The Studio plan unlocks advanced capabilities for professional use. Here are the main additions compared to the Creator plan:
- Commercial use of maps created with Inkarnate (e.g. selling maps, commissioned work, etc)
- Unlimited map slots
- More Custom Asset slots (10,000)
- Access to the Art Manager (Organize your art in Styles and packs, assign tags, set asset defaults and more.)
- Export Maps at 16k resolution
- Early Access (post 2.0). Gain access to features and art before the Creator plan
Can I sell maps created with Inkarnate?
Yes, commercial use is included with the Studio tier. Maps exported while you had an active Studio subscription remain licensed for commercial use, even after cancellation or downgrade.
Do I own maps I made?
Absolutely, you do! At Inkarnate, we believe in empowering creators. We don’t claim any ownership over the maps you create using our platform. Your creations are exclusively yours.
Creating maps on Inkarnate
What do I need to start creating on Inkarnate?
You’ll just need an Inkarnate account and an internet connection.
Get started by signing up for Inkarnate with one of our plans (there’s a free version too!). Then create your first map and start bringing your worlds to life.
Our Reddit user community will be happy to assist you with feedback on finished creations.
Can I download my maps?
Yes, you can! All maps can be exported as images, ready to be used online or printed in your tabletop games or books.
Can I use Inkarnate offline?
No, at the moment for using Inkarnate you'll need to have Internet connection.
Payments on Inkarnate
How much does Inkarnate cost?
If you want more than what the Free version offers, you can choose to upgrade to a paid plan. You can see the plans here.
What’s the difference between the monthly and yearly plans?
Both monthly and yearly provide the same tools and options. The only difference between the two plans is that the monthly plan is paid monthly, and the annual plan is paid annually. Most of our users choose the annual plan, because you can save up to 50% per year!
How can I pay for the subscription?
We currently offer two payment methods. You can either pay via Credit or Debit Cards (Stripe), or using PayPal.
Can I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription (further payments) anytime from your account page.
