A city map for my D&D campaign, set in the world of Erewar.

Prothea is one of Erewar's oldest and largest cities. Located in a special place in the world where the veil between the material plane and divine plane is at its thinnest, the area was quickly settled by religious groups looking for a place to better communicate with their deity.

Nearly a millennia ago, Prothea was completely destroyed by the Avsalan Empire, a magocratic state that declared religion illegal, and underscored that point by destroying the world's religious capital. After the Fall of Avsalan, the Holy Capital of Prothea was rebuilt by the Pact of Aurora, a confederation of seven powerful city-states along the Dragon Coast.

After its reconstruction, Prothea rapidly expanded with a massive influx of worshippers, and clashes between followers of very different religions ramped up over the following century. Eventually, the high priests of the Circle of Seven, a subset of deities within the larger Erewarian pantheon that represent the majority of the world's worshippers pressured the High Lord of Prothea to increase their power within the city's government to deal with the conflict. Initially reluctant, the High Lord's hand was forced when the violence escalated to open warfare. The monarchy's power was dissolved and made way for a parliament headed by representatives of the Circle of Seven, who promptly declared worship of any religion outside of the Circle of Seven illegal within the city, then unleashed their armies upon the populace, driving out those accused of false faith and eventually bringing a questionable stability to the city.

While the repressive measures have kept the city at a relative state of peace, worship of illegal gods is still rampant within the city, with small shrines hidden deep within the suburbs. Groups seeking to change the status quo and return the city to freedom of religion gather more and more members, while the Inquisition quickly loses their capacity to find and root them out.
