Nestled in the dense forest canopies of the tribal Astorlands, Duna is no more than a fortified trading post servicing business between Salazaria, Oxendale, and the cities of the Opal Coast.
The Dun Lur River winds through this stretch of the mystery-shrouded Darkmantle Forest, flowing north to the City of Alfond. The rushing currents of the river make navigation near impossible, and so goods have historically traveled the Opal Road on the river's east banks.
The large trading post was constructed first in the year 882 to service trade going up the Dun Lur towards Oxendale, capital city of the Astorlands, and the kingdom of Salazaria and its two cities along the Black Anvil sea. Shortly thereafter, the river was diverted to turn the post into an island, and the stockade was constructed in its defense.
Throughout the next century, Duna would change hands between control from the Salazarian Empire and the tribes of northern Dania, but through it all, the trading post survived, much in thanks to the city's impenetrable defenses.
These days much of Duna's business is in its craftsmanship. Candlemakers, Jewelers, and Leatherers all call the outpost home. Undoubtedly however, the biggest claim to fame on craftsmanship in Duna comes from just outside its town walls, at the famed Windkiln Brick Company - where master-creater TS Gary's patented ceramics work has captured the imagination of countless Alfondians. The famous mud used to create her masterpieces, comes from mud flats just steps away from where thousands of arrows, shields, lamps, and tiles are molded and dried to perfection everyday.
TS Gary also has her artwork featured throughout the streets of Duna. Most notably, a statue of a man on horseback leading a charge, named "Calvary." The work memorializes the famous Mud Hill charge of the town militia, and has been greeting visitors for going on half a century.
In Duna, mud is big business. It has even effected the way people get around. When wet, the iron and sodium rich mud has a strange, bouncy texture that makes for great padding material, but also does not cling, which means that the mud-covered roads in and around Duna are well suited for horses. In turn, people in this area of the Astorlands tend to utilize mounts more often than usual, and live further from each other and from city centers. In and around Duna, living near the well-maintained roads is crucial, even if it means being further from town.
