Venice

Founded by refugees from northeastern Italy at the decline of the Roman Empire, Venice evolved into a formidable thalassocracy during the Middle Ages. By the early 14th century, it was home to around 130,000 people, spread across a hundred islands reclaimed from the lagoon.
